Common Causes of Joint Pain and Loss of Mobility

The most common cause of chronic joint pain and disability in the U.S. is arthritis. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and traumatic arthritis are the most common forms of this disease.

  • Osteoarthritis—Generally occurs in people 50 years of age and older as well as in individuals with a family history of arthritis. Joint pain and stiffness are caused when cartilage wears away and allows bones to rub against each other.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis—An autoimmune disease in which the synovial membrane becomes inflamed, produces too much synovial fluid and damages the articular cartilage, leading to pain and stiffness.
  • Traumatic arthritis—Can follow a serious joint injury or fracture. A fracture across the joint can cause a condition known as osteonecrosis. The articular cartilage becomes damaged and, over time, causes joint pain and stiffness.

Total Joint Classes

If you are planning a total joint replacement surgery, we strongly encourage you and your family to attend a free joint class prior to surgery. Research has shown that attending this type of class helps patients feel more confident and comfortable about their surgery, resulting in better outcomes.

During your joint class, a team of experts from different areas of your recovery process will explain each step of your total joint replacement and rehab. You will learn how the surgery is performed and what to expect before, during and after the surgery.

Total Joint Replacement Class Topics Include:

  • Pain control
  • Equipment used during your hospital stay and at home
  • Physical limitations and precautions after surgery
  • Helpful exercises during rehabilitation
  • Planning a safe return home
  • Family support classes

You and your family are encouraged to ask questions and express any concerns about the surgery, and educational materials are available for your review and reference. Before your surgery, your physician’s office will contact you to attend a joint class.
