Before Surgery

Being well-prepared can make you feel more at ease on the day of your surgery. Your healthcare team will help you learn what to do to prepare and feel ready.

Be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions about when or if you should take any medicines. To help reduce your risk for infection, take a shower with the special soap you received at your preoperative interview. Do not shave the area of the surgery. If this is necessary, the doctor will take care of it.

Please do NOT:

  • Eat or drink anything after midnight, including ice chips, gum or mints.
  • Bring valuables, jewelry, credit cards or cash.
  • Bring your own medications.
  • Bring assistive devices to the hospital until the day before you are scheduled for discharge.

Things to bring to the hospital:

  • Loose-fitting clothing with an elastic waistband.
  • Shoes or slippers with rubber bottoms that cover your entire foot.
  • Eyeglasses, dentures and/or hearing aids.
  • Sleep apnea device.
  • Copy of your Advanced Health Directive.
  • Important telephone numbers (include your joint coach).
  • Your joint journal so you can review the information with your healthcare team.
